A trip to Almaty, Kazakhstan would not be complete without visiting the Ascension Cathedral in Panfilov Park. This cathedral is one of the most distinctive structures in the city and a popular tourist destination.

In this article, I will guide you on how to get there and explore the city on your own.

Ascension Cathedral also known as Zenkov Cathedral is a Russian orthodox church built in the center of Panfilov Park, Almaty, Kazakhstan. Interestingly, this cathedral is made of wood without nail. The church stands about 56 meters tall making it one of the tallest wooden churches in the world. The church was built in 1904 and completed in 1907. The church attracts many tourists due to its charm and bright colors as well as its history. Today, it is one of the most visited structures in Almaty.

How to get to Ascension Cathedral-DIY?

Ascension Cathedral is located in the center of Almaty, particularly in Panfilov Park. Subsequently, visiting this church is relatively easy and can be done DIY.

DIY Option:

Walking-If you are staying in the city and your location is close to this church, I highly suggest walking going to the Zenkov Cathedral. Just utilize the google map and select the walking option. In my case, before coming to Almaty, I consider booking hotel near to Ascension Cathedral, so that I can easily visit this place by walking.

Alternatively, ride a taxi from your hotel directly to Ascension Cathedral. Please download Yandex Go for booking a taxi. Booking a taxi in Almaty is cheap; hence, it won’t hurt your pocket.

Private Vehicle: If you have a car or friend in Almaty, drive directly to Panfilov Park. If you are unsure of the location, use Google Maps for route guide. Don’t worry, Parking area is available in the area.

Tours with transfer: Other option is joining a group tour available at any travel agency. Mostly, it is combined with city tour and Shymbulak ski resort. You can check Trip Advisor (viator.com), Get your guide website for package. But as for me, I suggest do it DIY to enjoy your own time; besides, the cathedral is accessible.

When is the best time to visit Ascension Cathedral?

Ascension Cathedral is amazing either spring, summer, autumn or winter. It’s just really depending on your preference. However, based on my trip, I would say that the park & Cathedral looks mysterious & magical in winter.

Below are the months season in Almaty for reference:

  • Spring: March to May
  • Summer: June to August
  • Autumn: September to November
  • Winter: December to February

Where to stay?

Staying in the city of Almaty is advisable. You can check hotels near to the cathedral in booking.com or you have option to reserve in AirBNB.

Other things to do near the Cathedral.

Visit Green Market: close to the cathedral is the Green Market where you can buy souvenir items and delicacies of Kazakhstan. I also bought Kazakhstan chocolate here.

Travel Tips when planning to visit Ascension Cathedral

Below are some tips you should consider when visiting to this historical church.

  • If you are visiting in Winter, please wear with many layers suitable for this season as the temperature in the city reach below negative Degree Celsius. A good winter shoes is also recommended. Don’t forget to wear thermal cloth, I did 4 layers by the way for my winter outfit to protect me from extreme cold weather.
  • Take off your hat when entering the church.
  • For women, dress conservatively and ensure that shoulder and knees are covered.
  • Remember that weekends are the busiest day in the resort, so if you are coming as a tourist, better to avoid this day and schedule in weekdays instead.
  • Remember to bring small bill/coins to be used for paying in Comfort Room/Washroom just in case required.
  • If you are traveling solo, bring your own selfie stick stand to capture solo video and photos. I was alone in this tour, so, I know how difficult it was to capture good photos and videos including myself.
  • Be a responsible traveler and keep Ascension Cathedral clean.
  • Take only memories, leave only footprints.

Budget when visiting the Ascension Cathedral

The cost of traveling to Zenkov/Ascension Catherdal is very cheap. There is no entrance fee, but donations are welcome. Over-all, I did not spend anything in visiting this place, since I walk from my hotel going here. But I did spend for buying chocolate and souvenir in green market, after that I took my lunch and drink coffee.

If you join a group package tour. Based on my experience, most tourists spend around 100 to 130 USD, including the food. This is already a package tour where you can visit four tourist spots like Shymbulak, Medeo Skating & Koktobe. You can also check viator.com or tripadvisor.com or get your guide for other tour options.

What to bring.

  • Money in Cash (Kazakhstan tenge) or credit card (note that in Almaty, Kazakhstan online payment is common, only in small store or in rural area you are required to use cash.
  • Comfortable shoes depends on the season you will visit
  • For foreigners always bring your passport and kept it in safe bag.
  • Sunscreen for skin protection
  • Bottle of water, always stay hydrated during your travel.
  • Sun glass
  • Light Snacks
  • Cap for head & face sun protection
  • Jacket applicable for summer or winter depends on season
  • Power bank for your phone
